How Books are Leveled

Most elementary kids in Santa Cruz County participate in the program through school. They are regularly assessed on their reading ability according to the scale used by the program. Elementary reading levels range from 0 to 6 and exist independently of age or grade level.
In recent years, there has been much discussion over the use of reading levels with children. In regards to this topic, 25Books believes that reading levels are a valuable tool for teachers, librarians, parents and the kids themselves. Having knowledge of a child’s reading level allows adults to gently guide and support the child’s choices. By having book levels and reading abilities readily available, adults can make informed decisions about which books make the most sense for which kids. Ultimately, 25Books wants children to choose the books that they want to (and will) read. Reading levels are just another resource for adults to use to help kids make the best possible choice.
